Случайно наткнулся на итальянский фантастический комикс и он показался мне очень интересным. На сколько мне удалось найти информацию по нему в сети, его черно-белый вариант переводило и выпускало американское издательство Eclipse Comics. Но данный перевод найти не удалось. В любом случае он был переиздан в цвете, и сейчас есть нормального качества оригинальные итальянские сканы, чтобы можно было почитать его самостоятельно. Всего насчитывается 3 тома, каждый из которых внутри разбит на отдельные подглавы, что по-моему достаточно хорошо помогает разворачивать канву повествования.

Он был создан аргентино-итальянским дуэтом: Эмилио Балькарсе, писателем и сценаристом и Хуаном Занотто, известным художником, который работал в нескольких жанрах, но особенно отметился в научной фантастике.

Написан он в модном сейчас жанре пост-апокалиптического романа, однако ему удалось избежать заезженных клише, благодаря своей иронии, неприкрытому эротизму и частым отсылкам к классической культуре, религии, литературе и (!) шахматам.


Третья мировая война уничтожила почти все человечество и любые формы гражданского общества, оставшиеся в живых живут в полуварварском состоянии. На территории Америки, опустошенной ядерными взрывами, где до сих пор царит сильная радиация и смерть, на "шахматном поле" ведут борьбу две силы, появившиеся из руин.

Первая сила - это Нерон, суперкомпьютер, созданный  учеными из объединенной системы аэрокосмической обороны США и Канады (НОРАД), для защиты страны от иностранного вторжения. После того, как банки его памяти повреждаются вирусом, и он забывает о цели своего существования, он претерпевает процесс реинкарнации, выбрав систему правления одноименного римского императора. Так же как и живший когда Нерон, который обвинил христиан в сожжении Рима, суперкомпьютер обвиняет выживших в ядерном холокосте, и решает посвятить все свои силы и ресурсы для разрушения того, что осталось от человечества. Он начинает строить машины для убийства, называя их терминами Римской империи (центурионы, львы, гладиаторы, преторианцы, и т.д...), и опустошает мир.

I've recently stumbled on a sci-fi Italian comic and it seemed very interesting at a first glance. As far as I could find information on it in the Internet, its black-and-white version was translated and published by Eclipse Comics. But I couldn’t find this translation. In any case, it was re-released in color, and now there are the normal quality original Italian scans to be able to read it myself. It comprises three volumes, each of which is divided internally into separate sub-chapters, which in my opinion helps a lot to expand gradually the fabric of the narrative.

It was created by the Argentine-Italian duo Emilio Balcarce, novelist and screenwriter and Juan Zanotto, a famous artist who has worked in several genres, but particularly famed in science fiction.

The series is made in very trendy now genre of post-apocalyptic novel, but it managed to avoid the common clichés, thank to its irony, blatant eroticism and frequent allusions to classical culture, religion, literature, and (!) chess.

After the Third World War destroyed almost all of humanity and all forms of civil society, the survivors live in semi-barbaric state. In America, devastated by nuclear explosions, where still reigns radiation and death, two forces are fighting on the "chessboard", emerged from the ruins.

The first force - is Nero, a supercomputer created by scientists from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) to protect the country from foreign invasion. After his memory banks were damaged by a virus and he forgot the purpose of his existence, he is undergoing a process of reincarnation, choosing the system of government of the Roman Emperor of the same name. As well as real lived Nero, who accused Christians of burning Rome, supercomputer accuses survivors in a nuclear holocaust, and decided to devote all its energy and resources to the destruction of what is left of humanity. He begins to build killing machines, calling them by the terms of the Roman Empire (centurions, lions, gladiators, praetorians, etc...), and devastate the world.

Второй игрок - это Мозг, продукт генной инженерии, монструозный полу-человек полу-киборг с невероятными способностями. Являясь неудачным армейским экспериментом, он обладает способностью телепатически управлять разумом излученных жертв холокоста. С этими войсками (которые он, как страстный игрок в шахматы, называет пешками) Мозг тщетно пытается противостоять машинам Нерона.

Another player is the Brain, the product of genetic engineering, monstrous half-human half-cyborg with incredible abilities. Being unsuccessful army experiment, he has the ability to telepathically control the mind of Holocaust survivors. With these troops (which he, as a passionate chess player, calls pawns) Brain tries in vain to resist the deadly machinery of Nero.

Мозг ненавидит Нерона, так как в свое время военные его забраковали и выбрали вместо него супер-компьютер. Дело в том, что Мозг обнаружил в себе большую страсть к извращениям и сексу, что выставило его ненадежным и импульсивным в глазах военной элиты.



Между двух этих огней находятся выжившие люди, которые ведут партизанскую войну против обоих сторон.

The Brain hates Nero, as in due time, the military rejected it and chose instead a super-computer. The fact is that the Brain revealed his great passion for sexual perversions that showed him impulsive and unreliable in the eyes of the military elite.

Between these two fires are survivors who lead a guerrilla war against both sides.

As I mentioned earlier art of Zannoto stands out for its eroticism.

Мозг вуайерист, голодный до сексуальных развлечений. Он любит заставлять своих зомби-рабов заниматься разнузданным сексом, сам при этом испытывая оргазмы через силу телепатии только и оставшуюся у него. Художник не стесняется в изображении этих повальных оргий.

The Brain is a voyeur, hungry for sexual entertainment. He makes his zombie slaves getting engaged in unbridled sex while experiencing orgasm through the power of telepathy. The comic artist is not shy in showing these wild orgies.

Другая черта серии - это наглядный реализм в изображении жестоких сцен.

Another feature of the series is a visual realism in the depiction of violent scenes.

Текст полон всяческих аллюзий и отсылок. Почти каждую главу венчает известная цитата (от Артура Кларка до Борхеса).

The text is full of allusions and different references. Almost every chapter is crowned by famous quote (from Arthur C. Clarke to Borges)

Nero uses the terms of the Roman army for naming his machines.

His helicopters, for example, are Praetorians. They patrol the neighborhood from the air.

Все данные машины чем-то напоминают роботов из фильма Терминатор, проезжая по крошащимся черепам и уничтожая все на своем пути, нагоняя  страх на людей, прячущихся, как кролики в разных норах.

All these machines are somewhat similar to Terminators from a famous movie, driving on crumbling skulls and destroying everything in their path, sawing fear in people who hide like rabbits in small holes.

Главный герой серии - девушка по прозвищу Сафари (в комиксе упоминается ее настоящее имя: Бади Хант). Сама она себя называет "cacciatore cacciato" (охотник на охотников). C собой носит всегда плюшевого мишку, как символ потерянного детства и мести. Уничтожает машины при помощи ручного гранатомета.

The main protagonist of the series is a girl known as Safari (in the comics mentioned her real name: Body Hunt). She calls herself "cacciatore cacciato" (hunter of hunters). She always carries a teddy bear as a symbol of a lost childhood and revenge. She destroys the machines with a hand grenade.

Она вначале примыкает в живущим под землей повстанцам.

At first she joins underground-living rebels.

Сбежавшего из лап Нерона главаря повстанцев-рабов прозвали Оксид, за его терпеливый и неуемный характер во время содержания в тюрьме и постоянный саботаж (типа оксид разъедает железо). Рабы нужны Нерону для строительства своих машин, он держит их в клетках, постоянно подвергая пыткам и издевательствам. На лбах проставляются специальные номера.

After escaping from the clutches of Nero, slaves’ rebel leader was called Oxide, for his patienсe, indefatigable character in prison and constant sabotage (as oxide wears out iron). Nero needs slaves to build his machines, he keeps them in cages, constantly tortured and abused. He puts specific numbers on their foreheads.

Рабов кормят останками других рабов, перемалывая в огромной мясорубке.

Slaves are fed by the remains of other slaves, after being processed in a large grinder.

В тюрьме Нерона есть небольшая секта - братство Аббакус (по древнему названию счет). Оно существовало еще до апокалипсиса и призывало к отказу от всех технологий и возврату к естественной жизни.

In Nero’s prison, there is a small sect - the brotherhood Abacus (the ancient name of the counting frame). They existed before the apocalypse, and called for the rejection of all technology and return to natural life.

Партизаны живут под землей, в полуразрушенной станции метро. Они находятся между двух огней: с одной стороны машины-убийцы Нерона, с другой зомби-солдаты Мозга, которые делают на них набеги, крадут еду и молодых женщин для оргий хозяина. 

На картинке Оксид показывает сыну Рэндому своеобразный холл славы повстанцев: части корпусов уничтоженных машин.

Примечательно: сына Оксида зовут Random, его девушку Basic, а пацана Bit, собаку инструктора Matrix. (компьютерные термины)

Сам Мозг, называет своих говорящих всегда в унисон зомби, пешками. В комиксе есть еще одно интересное определение: буратины (burattini). Их к слову можно убить только выстрелом в голову. А сам мозг себя называет кукловодом-буратиноидом (burattinaio).

Guerrillas live underground in an abandoned subway station. They are between two fires: on the one side are killer-machines of Nero, on the other zombie-soldiers of Brain that make constant raids, stealing food and young women to their master’s orgies.

On the picture Oxide shows his son Random the Hall of Fame of rebels: parts of the hulks of destroyed vehicles.

Worth to note: Oxide son is named Random, his girlfriend is Basic, a boy’s name Bit, coach’s dog is Matrix. (computer terms)

The Brain itself calls his zombies, which are always speaking in unison, pawns. In the comic, there is one interesting definition: puppet (burattini). Need to mention that they could be killed only with a headshot. And he calls himself a puppeteer (burattinaio).

На территории Америки после ядерной войны климат меняется очень быстро, зимние пейзажи соседствуют с жаркими пустынями из за разрывов в озоновом слое.

After a nuclear war in America, the climate is changing very fast, winter landscapes are combined with hot deserts because of the gaps in the ozone layer.

Из-за радиации земля населена страшными мутировавшими тварями.

Land is inhabited by scary creatures mutated after radiation.

Например, огромные гадюки и песчаные жуки.

For example, huge vipers and sand beetles.

Funny stuff: characters in the public library, throwing books into the fire (including "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury)

- I roditori sono sempre stati nemici delle macchine. Prima divoravano la carta degli archivi... Poi, quando gli archivi sono stati computerizzati, hanno cominciato a divorare i cavi dei banchi di memoria.

- Rodents have always been enemies of the machines. Before they were devouring paper archives ... Then, when the archives had been computerized, they began to devour the cables of the memory banks.

- Грызуны всегда были врагами машин. Сначала они пожирали бумажные архивы ... Затем, когда архивы были компьютеризированы, они начали уничтожать кабели банков данных.

Рассказывать сюжет не стану, почитайте сами... Очень амбициозная, интересная и философская фантастика.

I won’t tell here the whole story; you must read it yourself ... Very ambitious, interesting and philosophical science fiction.

Aama 1 - The Scent of Warm Dust

A story of the Swiss author Frederick Peeters, who creates and draws his works. In the apt words of one of the reviewers this is not quite a "hard" science fiction, but rather an intergalactic road-trip seamlessly interspersed with flashbacks and having a non-linear structure.

The story begins with a cried man waking up in a desolate landscape. While trying to remember something (his name, where is he, what’s happening), the first story’s strange character occurs, who judging by the comments of many who read this story will be one of the central protagonists – gorilla-like barelegged robot Churchill.

He hands the man a notebook, from which the reader will know all events preceding to man’s awakening.

История швейцарского автора Фредерика Питерса, который часто сам придумывает и рисует свои истории. По меткому выражению одного из рецензентов это не совсем «твердая» научная фантастика, а скорее интергалактический road-trip плавно перемежающийся с флешбеками и имеющий нелинейную структуру.

История начинается с того, что заплаканный мужчина просыпается посреди опустошенного ландшафта. При попытках вспомнить хоть что-нибудь (имя, где он, что происходит) появляется первый забавный персонаж этого эпоса, который судя по откликам многих читавших, будет одним из центральных – горилоподобный голоногий робот Черчилль.

Он вручает мужчине записную книжку, из которой читателю и открываются все предшествующие его пробуждению события.

Интересные слова и выражения / Interesting words and expressions

• Tutoyer - тыкать (to be on the first-name basis)

Во французском языке в отличие от английского есть два типа обращения к лицу, неформальное "tu" и формальное "vous". Поэтому в языке есть глагол tutoyer - обращаться к кому-то на ты, тыкать. Фраза Черчилля "Vous devez me tutoyer" переводиться "Мы же с тобой на ты" (букв. ты должен обращаться ко мне ты)

In French, unlike the English there are two ways of adressing a person, informal "tu" and formal "vous". Therefore, there is a verb in the language: tutoyer - to contact someone on the first-name basis. Churchill's phrase "Vous devez me tutoyer" is translated "We are with you on the first-name basis" (literally, you have to adress me "you").
